— General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong paid a visit to Vinh Thuy Commune, Vinh Linh District in the central province of Quang Tri on Wednesday. The commune is one of the province’s three communes meeting the standard of a new rural model. General Secretary Trong emphasized that building up a new rural model is not only about developing infrastructure and improving people’s life, but also about making rural residents more dynamic.
Society
— Local authorities and residents in Thach Hoa and Dong Hoa Communes in Tuyen Hoa District in the central province of Quang Binh will sign a commitment not to hunt as well as destroy the living environment of Trachypithecus hatinhensis (also called Ha Tinh langur in Vietnamese). On February 4, Hoang Minh De, chairman of the Tuyen Hoa District People’s Committee, said the district has assigned the two communes to protect the animal which has been listed in the Vietnamese Red Book as a species that needs to be strictly protected. There are around 60 individuals of the animal in the two communes.
— On February 4, police in the southern province of Kien Giang transferred eight pangolins weighing 42kg to the provincial Forest Protection Department. The animals were found on a bus from Ha Tien Town to Ho Chi Minh City on February 3. Police are investigating.
— Hoang Dinh Chan, director of Hung Viet Cancer Hospital in Hanoi, said Vietnamese people’s knowledge of cancer is very limited. Each year the country has 200,000 new cancer patients, 70,000 cancer patients die and 80 percent of Vietnamese cancer patients come to the hospital when the disease has entered the late stages, affecting treatment and shortening the time patients could live.

— Numerous enterprises have offered many promotions and discounts on their products on the occasion of the Tet holiday which falls on February 19 this year. However, some sellers have taken advantage of the holiday to sell their fake and low-quality goods under the guise of discounted products.
— On February 4, Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Vissan companies introduced their Australian cows raised in Vietnam after more than eight months of implementing a project to feed the animals in Central Highlands provinces.
Education
— Chau Van Liem High School in the southern city of Can Tho will be rebuilt from this July. Under the plan, the almost-100-year-old school which is seriously degraded will be reconstructed but still retain its original architecture.
Lifestyle
— A Tet-themed festival is being held at the Nguyen Du Culture and Sports Club in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The event running until February 18 features 15 booths with activities like calligraphy and painting exhibitions as well as selling handicraft products.
