Vietnamese Pham Van Phuong won two titles during the second leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) ‘s Asia 14 and Under Championships, Division II, which concluded in HCM City yesterday.
Phuong of Binh Duong defeated Vo Hoang Hung of HCM City 2-0 (7-6, 6-4) in the boys’ singles category to win the title.
During the boys’ doubles final, Phuong and Pham Duc Phu defeated their teammates Vo Hoang Hung and Thai Nguyen to emerge as the winners.
In the event’s first leg, Phuong also seized the boys’ singles and doubles titles.
Meanwhile, Pakistani player Mahin Aftab Qureshi overpowered Anika Seneviratne of Sri Lanka in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4 during the summit clash to win the girl’s singles title.
Mahin is the first female player in the under-14 girls’ category to compete from Pakistan tennis and to have won the ITF Asian championship title. She was also a runner-up in the first leg of the championship.
In the girls’ doubles, Rawat Ira Mehernissa and Mathema Anne of Nepal bested Seneviratne Anika and Perera Prabbudhi of Sri Lanka to take the lead.
With two boys’ singles titles, two boys’ doubles titles and two second-placed finishes, Viet Nam accumulated 1,410 points in total and have been promoted to play in Division I of the same event next year.
Phuong and Hung were issued wild cards to play in the ITF’s Asian U14 Division I championships in Bangkok, Thailand earlier this year.
The tournament attracted a total of 65 players, including 28 girls, from 12 countries, such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as Nepal, Cambodia and Bhutan.
