After days of investigation, police officers in Hanoi charged William Rafael Agular Villanueva, 43, and Jose Marcelino Velasquez Aviles, 63, with “stealing property” pursuant to Article 138 of the Penal Code, local media reported.

Both men are of Peruvian nationality.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Van Dap said the Hanoi police began probing after several hotels reported that their guests had fallen victim to foreign thieves.

On January 8, the Sofitel Metropole Hotel in Hoan Kiem District said that one of its guests, Deborrah Shimizu, 63, of Canadian nationality, lost a tablet, a camera, money, credit cards and other belongings in a theft, according to Cong An Nhan Dan (People’s Police) newspaper.

Through watching the hotel’s surveillance cameras, police detected two foreigners entering the hotel in a suspicious manner.

Suspecting that they were the culprits of the theft, police launched an investigation and then found out the temporary residences of both foreigners.

Police kept a close watch on the suspects and arrested them the next day when they were attempting to sell the stolen items at a pawnshop.

The two foreigners admitted to stealing from the Canadian woman as well as others at several luxurious hotels in the capital city.

The thieves told police that they love traveling and that they carried out the thefts to make money to travel to different countries around the world.

They added they often mingled with other foreign guests in large hotels and then tried to steal from them to fund their next trips.

The two men told investigators that after arriving in Hanoi, they stayed in two different hotels several kilometers apart from each and remained in contact by telephone.

Police are investigating further to identify other victims of the thieves.
