Prominent Vietnamese weightlifter, Thach Kim Tuan, had a stunning performance at the ongoing 2014 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) world championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.


The men’s 56kg weight class featured 39 competitors, including the world’s top athletes Li Fabin and Long Qing Quan from China and Om Yun Chol from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Kim Tuan and Tran Le Quoc Toan took their place for Vietnam.


Tuan, 20, (current ASIAD 17 silver medal) outplayed his Chinese riva Li Fabin (lifting 134kg) and Long Qing Quan (lifting 133kg) with 135kg. His achievement helped him secure a gold medal in the jerk’s event with the added bonus of breaking his own record set in the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, the Republic of Korea this September.


Meanwhile, Tran Le Quoc Toan could only manage fifth place in the same category, lifting a total of 280kg.


In the clean event, the Vietnamese athlete (lifting 161kg) was defeated by his competitor from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Om Yun Chol (lifting 168kg) and took silver.


In the snatch’s event, Thach Kim Tuan lifted a total of 296kg, the same as Om Yun Chol. However, Tuan could only take second place, silver as he weighed in 0.04kg heavier than his DPRK opponent (55.75kg against 55.71kg).


The Vietnamese delegastion is represented by five male athletes: Thach Kim Tuan and Tran Le Quoc Toan (56kg); 27th SEA Games runners-up, Nguyen Hong Ngoc (77kg), Hoang Tan Tai (85kg) and Tran Van Hoa (94kg).


The championships will wrap up on November 16./.
