The women’s under-19 football team of Vietnam was beaten 3-0 by Australia in Hanoi Sunday, giving up their dream to qualify for the 2015 AFC U19 Championships.
Playing on home turf but faced with a stronger rival, Vietnam chose the play defence and saved its game maker Le Hoai Luong for counter-attacks in the second half.
The game plan, however, crashed in the 8th minute when Australian captain Amy Harrison successfully converted a penalty.
Hosts Vietnam had no choice but pressing forward, but the Australian defence with goalkeeper Hannah Southwell and defenders Emma Checker, O’Brien and others held firm despite the challenge.
As offensive Vietnam left more space at the back, Australia took full advantage to score two more goals in the 55th minute by striker Beattie Goad and in the 81st minute by striker Sunny Franco.
Vietnam’s coach Nguyen Duy Hung said his team “played their best,” but Australia showed “they are of a higher level.”
The Young Matildas now tops group C and joins Korea Republic, DPR Korea, China and Japan in the eight nation finals held in Nanjing, China from 19 – 30 August, 2015.
