Vietsovpetro begins construction of $230m oil rig

Vietsovpetro, a Vietnam-Russia oil and gas joint venture, began construction of a US$230-million rig in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Saturday.

The Tam Dao 05 jack-up rig weighs 18,000 tons and can drill to a depth of nine kilometers. Its design is based on the JU-2000E model made by the US’s Friede&Goldman.

The construction is expected to take 32 months.

It will be the second self-elevating unit to be built by the PetroVietnam Marine Shipyard JSC (PV Shipyard), a subsidiary of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group – one of the JV partners — after Tam Dao 03 that has been in operation since 2012.

Tam Dao 03 weighs 12,000 tons and can drill up to six kilometers.

PV Shipyard also upgraded the Singapore-built Tam Dao 02 jack-up rig for Vietsovpetro earlier this month.
