The Quang Binh provincial government plans to officially reopen Son Doong Cave, the largest in the world, to the public next January.
According to the plan, the cave will be opened for eight tours a month with roughly 10 people per tour.
Since September 1, adventure tours to Son Doong has been suspended.
Quang Binh authorities announced the plan last week after describing pilot tours run by Oxalis Company between August 2013 and August 2014 as “successful.”
But the authorities failed to say whether other companies would be permitted to host tours of Son Doong, which boasts at least 150 individual caves, a dense subterranean jungle and several underground rivers.
First discovered in 1991 by local resident Ho Khanh, Son Doong in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park became world famous in 2009 after it was explored by members of the British Cave Research Association with Khanh’s help.
Under the one-year pilot tourism program, a total of 243 adventure travelers from 34 countries explored the cave on six-day trips that cost US$3,000 per person.
