VietJetAir has signed an agreement with Vladivostok International Airport to open a direct flights between Vietnam and Russia.
A VietJetAir representative said the new route is expected to serve rising demand from tourists who previously relied on charter flights.
The number of Russian tourists visiting Vietnam is estimated to hit more than 350,000 this year.
The agreement was signed during the 17th meeting of the Vietnam – Russia Intergovernmental Committee on Economic – Trade and Scientific – Technological Cooperation, which was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanovic Shuvalov.
According to an agreement at the meeting, Russia will supply two Sukhoi Superjets to Vietnam, Ria Novosti quoted Russia’s Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Viktor Evtukhov as saying.
“The main project is to deliver the flagship Russian aircraft–the Sukhoi Superjet–to two Vietnamese airlines:Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. We had silenced on this issue for some time, the negotiations seemed to have stalled, but today the Vietnamese side said that there’s still interest in the jet, and we very much hope that the citizens of Vietnam will soon be able to fly on these comfortable and safe Russian aircraft,” Evtukhov said.
Vietnam and Russia have also agreed to push for the conclusion of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Vietnam and the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan by early next year.
Statistics show that the bilateral economic ties have seen remarkable progress. Bilateral trade turnover surpassed US$ 2.7 billion in 2013, up 12.61 percent against the previous month.
The 17th session of the Russia-Vietnam Inter-Governmental Commission opened in Vladivostok on Saturday.
The previous session was held in October 2013 in Hanoi, where 17 cooperative agreements were signed.
The next meeting was scheduled to take place in Vietnam in the second half of 2015.
