VietJet Air selling 360,000 tickets for Vietnam’s Tet travel

Vietnam’s no-frills carrier VietJet Air on Friday began selling 360,000 tickets for flights during Tet, or Vietnamese New Year, five months ahead of the busy travel season.

It is traditional for Vietnamese airlines to begin ticket sales for Tet travel months in advance, as millions of local people will return to their hometowns from big cities, where they work or pursue higher education, on the national holidays.

Ticket shortages are not uncommon, and airfares are usually increased to exorbitant rates due to high demand.

VietJet Air said 360,000 tickets for all of its domestic services are available during the first round of sales to serve passengers who worry about being unable to buy tickets when Tet nears.

Passengers are advised to book tickets as soon as possible to enjoy the best fares via different channels, from VietJet Air website www.vietjetair.com and mobile site http://bit.ly/1BDdBzh, as well as ticket agents and a hotline, the budget carrier said on its website.

Payments are accepted via Visa Card, Master Card, JCB, American Express and the ATM cards of 24 major Vietnamese banks.

VietJet Air also said it will deploy three new airplanes during the year’s busiest travel season to meet passenger demand.

“There is always a concern in the build up to Tet that there will be a ticket shortage, or that tickets for flights on all routes will cost more than usual,” VietJet Air business development director Desmond Lin said in a statement.

Lin said the first round of tickets for Tet, which falls on February 19, 2015, enables customers to “book well in advance and avail of our high quality flights at the best possible price.”

VietJet Air, a privately operated carrier, is the second airline to open sales for Tet tickets, following JetStar Pacific, also a low-cost carrier, which began selling them in July.

It is unclear when Vietnam’s national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, will follow suit.
