Southern hub to use electric vans for public transport next year

Ho Chi Minh City transport authorities are preparing to put electric vans, a kind of environmentally-friendly means of transport, into operation in the city’s downtown areas in 2015.

The HCMC Department of Transport has submitted to the city People’s Committee a project to use electric cars for passenger transportation on a pilot basis in the city’s central areas next year.

Electric vehicles are better than those run on petrol or diesel in that they cause no noise and environmental pollution, traffic experts said.

The new means of public transport are expected to be put into use in April 2015, when the upgrading of Nguyen Hue Street in District 1 into a walking street is complete, the department said.

The department has worked out two optional plans for use of electric cars.

According to Plan 1, electric cars will operate around the clock in a number of certain places in the city’s central areas, including tourist sites, restaurants and hotels.

Like taxis, such electric cars will serve guests directly or on request over the phone.

Under Plan 2, electric cars will operate like buses. That means they will serve passengers on fixed routes that run through major points of interest in the city, including big hotels and restaurants.

Specifically, electric cars will run through the 23/9 Park, the “backpacker” area – where a lot of foreigners stay – in District 1, Me Linh and Lam Son squares, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the Con Rua (“Turtle”) Lake, and such major streets as Le Loi, Nguyen Hue, Le Duan and Pasteur.

They will also serve guests at the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, Ben Thanh Market, the City Theatre, the Art Museum, the HCMC Revolution Museum, and some others.

Private businesses will invest in the project and the first electric passenger cars in the city are expected to debut on April 30, 2015, Duong Hong Thanh, Deputy Director of the HCMC Health Department, told the media.

This environmentally-friendly means of transport has already been used in the capital of Hanoi and the central city of Da Nang.
