Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was a reputable German master playwright, theater director, and poet.

He was also one of the world’s most influential theater directors in the 20th century.

An example of Brecht’s epic theater, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” (German: “Der Kaukasische Kreidekreis“) is a parable about a young peasant woman who rescues a baby and becomes a better mother than his rich biological parents.

The play was written in 1944 while Brecht was living in the United States and was later translated into English.

Its first professional production was made in Philadelphia before premiering in Berlin in 1954.
