Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has asked relevant ministries and sectors to work harder to care for and promote the role of the elderly in the community.

The Government official made the request while chairing a conference, held in Hanoi on September 11, to review the performance of the Vietnam National Committee for Elderly (VNCE) over the first half of the year.

Deputy PM Dam urged ministries and sectors to improve the deployment of the Vietnam Law on the Elderly and examine their policies on senior citizens, while co-ordinating with each other to realise the National Action Plan on the Elderly in the 2012 -2020 period.

He assigned the Vietnam Elderly Association to work closely with ministries, sectors and localities in developing the fund for supporting the elderly − particularly those belong to ethnic minority groups.

The Vietnam Fatherland Front was required to encourage the participation of its member organistions in programmes caring for the elderly.

According to a report released by the VNCE, over the first six months of this year, cities and provinces across the counties have been active in implementing the Law on Elderly, and their policies on the beneficiary.

A geriatric division has been established at local hospitals in 46 out of 63 cities and provinces, providing regular medical check-up for more than 2 million senior citizens during the reviewed period.

A number of programmes have been launched nationwide to provide healthcare for the elderly and raise their role in the community.
