Authorities in the central city of Da Nang inaugurated a new administrative center on Monday, more than one month after local public servants started working at the modern venue.

Standing at 166.8 meters high, the tallest in the region, the 34-story building fronts the city’s iconic Han River and looks to the East Vietnam Sea.

The building has four parts, including a two-floor basement, a base shaped like a boat, while the main structure and rooftop are designed like a lighthouse. The entire tower is covered with heat-absorbing glass.

The Da Nang Administrative Center broke ground on a 23,318 square meter land plot in November 2008, and consumed a VND1.981 trillion (US$93.24 million) investment.

The administrative hub is also considered a ‘smart building,’ as it is equipped with a modern management software system, enabling 1,500 people to work there every day.

All of the equipment and devices inside the building were manufactured after 2010, which will help save power consumption by up to 25 percent compared to normal buildings.

The city’s chairman, Van Huu Chien, said the new building is a “breakthrough to establish an administrative hub of Vietnam, in general, and the central region, in particular.”

“Located near the romantic Han River, the administrative hub is also an attraction point for the city’s downtown,” he said.

“The construction expresses the desire and ambition of Da Nang to thrive as a young, dynamic city.”

Around 1,600 public servants from 24 municipal departments and regulatory agencies relocated to the new working place in late July.

The officials receive an estimate of 600 residents on a daily basis.

Da Nang is home to many public infrastructure projects displaying modern architecture, such as the Dragon Bridge and the Thuan Phuoc Bridge.

The resort city is only a one hour and 15 minute flight away from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s biggest economic center.
