DA NANG (VNS)- General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the United States’ Joint Chiefs of Staff, yesterday commended the Da Nang thermal treatment system treating dioxin-contaminated soil.
The top ranking officer visited the site of the work at Da Nang airport where 45,000 cubic metres of soil is being treated.
Dempsey hailed the project as an important milestone in the bilateral relationship and for the people of Da Nang.
“The US Defence Department will continue to support, this important initiative,” he said, adding that the efforts were a testament to the growing bilateral relationship between the US Agency for International Development and the Vietnamese Air Defense-Air Force Command.
“The US and our military will continue to work to build this relationship and support a strong, prosperous and independent Viet Nam,” he said.
Dempsey said that addressing legacies of the American War had proven an effective way to promote relations between the two peoples.
He added that it also benefited people whose health and livelihoods had been affected by the deadly toxin and unexploded ordnance.
The governments of Viet Nam and the US have been collaborating on issues related to Agent Orange since 2000.
The first effort to treat dioxin-contaminated soil with In-Pile Thermal Desorption, IPTD or thermal remediation, at the airport started in April.
The project is on target for completion by 2016.
The five-year project has a total fund of US$84 million, of which VND35 billion (US$1.6 million) is from the Vietnamese Government.
Da Nang Airport and several other sites in other provinces are referred to as dioxin “hot spots“. The total areas to be treated amount to 73,000 cubic metres. They include Bien Hoa in Dong Nai. – VNS
