Vietnam police detain 2 for snatching handbag from Spanish woman
Police in Hanoi on Thursday captured two men for snatching a handbag from a Spanish woman who was walking on a street in Vietnam’s capital city early this month.
After days of investigation, police detained Doan Anh Tu and Nguyen Trong Hoang, both 30, for robbing Leonor Ramos Esteve, a 34-year-old woman with Spanish nationality, of her handbag on August 3.
Police seized from the two men two iPhones, two Samsung cellphones, a motorbike, a necklace, and two gold rings.
According to the case file, at 12:00 pm that day, Hoang was carrying Tu on a motorbike on Tay Ho Street when they found Esteve walking on the sidewalk with a handbag on her shoulder.
Tu then got off the motorbike, ran to the woman, and snatched the bag. The two robbers then escaped the scene on their motorbike.
The bag contained an iPhone 4S, two Spanish bank cards, one HSBC credit card, VND4 million (US$189) in cash, and many important papers.
After being arrested, they told investigators that they had used the cash to buy drugs for personal use.
They then pawned the iPhone at a pawnshop in Ba Dinh District for VND4 million and spent the entire amount.
Tu and Hoang, who are both Hanoi residents, have three and two past criminal convictions, respectively, police said.
They confessed to police that they had robbed two other women in the capital city since late July before snatching the handbag from the Spaniard.
They said they often targeted women traveling alone on motorcycles.
