Both Vietnam and Indonesia are looking forward to beating each other in their clash on Wednesday so that they can secure their chances to advance after both of them suffered losses two days ago at the Southeast Asian U-22 Football Championship.
On Monday, Vietnam was beaten 0-2 by Malaysia U-21s and Indonesia U-19s lost 1-3 to hosts Brunei U-22s in the second round of Group B.
Vietnam sent U-19 players to this U-22 tournament that takes place from August 8 to 23 in Brunei.
French coach Guillaume Graechen of the Vietnamese team said, “I will stage the roster from the 4-0 victory over Singapore last week to confront Indonesia.
“This line-up is strong enough to surpass Indonesia, who also need a win over us. So this will be an interesting match.”
However, he revealed his worry that, “Vietnamese players were exhausted in the 0-2 loss to the Malaysians two days ago. I am afraid they have been affected psychologically.
“The importance is that we have to head toward the Indonesia game with confidence.”
Now after two matches, Vietnam are standing third on the table with three points and Indonesia at fifth with one point.
Earlier, the French coach announced that he will field seven new players in the starting line-up in every match in Group B before short-listing the best team if Vietnam book a spot to advance to the semifinals.
Group B includes Cambodia, Indonesia, defending champions and hosts Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. All eleven teams of the Southeast Asian region take part in the biennial tournament this year.
Most players of the Vietnamese U-19 team are trainees of the football academy Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG based in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.
They have completed six out of seven years of their training program at the Arsenal-supported football academy, which was established in 2007.
Last year at the Southeast Asian U-19 Football Championship held in Surabaya, hosts Indonesia beat Vietnam 7-6 in a penalty shootout in the final.
