The project will be implemented over the next two years in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and An Giang with the aim of providing HIV/AIDS services sustainably.
Accordingly, community-based HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support services will be provided for 6,000 people, including 4,000 in high-risk groups such as drug users and prostitutes and 2,000 HIV carriers in the three localities. The project will help raise technical capacity on HIV/AIDS prevention and control, develop community-based organisations and enhance cooperation among relevant agencies in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Rena Bitter, US Consul General to HCM City, said the project will provide an effective approach to detect HIV carriers and help vulnerable citizen groups gain easier access to healthcare services. Close coordination among communal organisations and the National Committee for AIDS Prevention and Control will help improve HIV prevention efficiency at localities.
Tieu Thi Thu Van, Head of the Administrative Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for HIV/AIDS Prevention, said the number of new HIV infections has dropped sharply since 2008 in HCM City that aims to eliminate the epidemics by 2030.
The city has contained the spread of HIV/AIDS, especially among high-risk groups, Van added. The city has so far had 59,657 HIV carriers, of whom 49,581HIV carriers and 23,580 AIDS patients are still alive.
Last year saw 1,733 new HIV infections, 3,000 cases lower than 2008.
