VietNamNet Bridge – Public telephones are likely to appear again in Ho Chi Minh City after nearly two years of absence.
“The city has assigned us to build four telephone-information boxes in District 1 to serve tourists, who need information about locations,” said an official of the HCM City Department of Information and Telecommunications.
The stations will also serve local people; however, main purpose is to offer information for tourists. The city has not decided to use card or coins for these boxes.
The new phone-information booths will be installed at the locations of the previous phone boxes, which were removed in 2010.
If the phone booths are effective, the city will set up many more booths around the city.
In October 2012, about 2,000 public telephone booths in Saigon were cleared after 15 years of existence. In 2000, the people warmly welcomed these phone booths at tourist attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Saigon Post Office, hospitals, schools, etc.
However, about three years later, due to the rapid increase in usage of mobile phones, people were indifferent to the phone booths, so the city removed all of them.
