Nhan Dan Online – President Truong Tan Sang attended a ceremony held by Tien Giang province on August 20 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of national hero, Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864-2014).
The President offered incense at the grave of hero, Truong Dinh and the temple dedicated to the hero in Go Cong town and Gia Thuan commune in Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province.
At the commemorative ceremony, Secretary of Tien Giang provincial Party Committee Tran The Ngoc reviewed the life and career of the national hero in early days of the resistance war against the French colonialists more than 150 years ago.
Truong Dinh was born in 1820 in Tinh Khe commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province. When he was 24 years old, he followed his father to the south to gather poor farmers to establish a plantation in Gia Thuan commune, Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province.
He had led a resistance against the French colonialists for six years, won many glorious feat of arms and was honoured as ‘Binh Tay Dai nguyen soai’ (the Binh Tay marshal).
In a battle on August 20, 1864, Truong Dinh was seriously wounded and he killed himself with his sword to avoid being captured by the enemy, at the age of 44.
He had set a shining example of patriotism and strong will to fight against invaders and defend the country which has been preserved and promoted by younger generations.
Every year on August 20, Tien Giang province holds a ceremony to commemorate hero, Truong Dinh.
This year’s commemorative anniversary takes place for four days from August 17-20, with various activities such as sports competitions, cooking contests, singing performances and folk games, among others.
