Phu Yen embarks on sustainable coastal resources project

The central province of Phu Yen has embarked on a project “Coastal resources for sustainable development”, an endeavour co-funded by the Vietnamese government and the World Bank’s International Development Association.

The four-component project will focus on sustainable management of near-shore fishing, strengthening institutional capacity for sustainable fisheries management, good practices for sustainable aquaculture, and project management, monitoring and evaluation.

It will be implemented in 10 coastal communes at a total cost of 12.2 million USD, of which 85 percent is funded by WB loans, 10 percent is sourced from the State budget and the remaining is contributed by local residents.

Farmers will be able to learn about laws on the protection and development of aquatic resources and ways to tackle environment pollution.

Important sub-components of the project include the upgrade of Dong Tac and Dan Phuoc fishing ports, and improvement of bio-safety in Xuan Loc and Hoa Hiep Nam communes.

The project in Phu Yen is part of a bigger scheme worth over 117 million USD covering the central provinces of Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa, and the southern provinces of Ca Mau and Soc Trang between August 2012 and January 2018.-VNA
