(VOV) -Four Chinese nationals that tried to manipulate ATMs in the northern port city of Haiphong through the use of fraudulent credit cards and steal billions have received long prison terms.

Following a two-day trial by the Haiphong municipal People’s Court on August 25-26 defendant Xiong Jie, 35, was handed a 17 year prison sentence, while Lin Wei, 50, got 14 years, Lin Li Hua, 33, also got 14 years, and Lin Jia Jun, 21, received a 12 year sentence.
The law-breakers were charged with “using computer and telecommunications networks, the internet and digital equipment to misappropriate assets“.
According to the indictment, between March 16-26, 2013, the four Chinese defendants successfully completed 196 ATM transactions using forged bank cards absconding with over VND3.9 billion (US$183,300) from Vietcombank and Vietinbank.
Police forces report they are currently searching for Yu Bin, another suspected involved in the case.
