A zoo in southern Vietnam has received three giraffes of South African origin after spending more than VND4 billion (US$188,271) buying them from a zoo in Thailand.
The three long-necked animals arrived at the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.
The three-year old giraffes include two males and one female with an average height of 3.5 meters each.
Phan Viet Lam, director of the Vietnamese zoo, said that giraffe is the world’s tallest animal with an average height of five to six meters and weight of 1.2 tonnes each.
Giraffes live as a group of 10 to 20 members and they usually eat buds.
The zoo currently houses a total of five giraffes including two males and three females in two separate areas. A female giraffe often gives birth to only one baby after around 15 months being pregnant.
