HA NOI (VNS) – Chinese ships continued to aggressively approach Vietnamese vessels moving near the Chinese oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 yesterday.
The Vietnamese law-enforcement ships were operating in Viet Nam’s territorial waters in the East Sea.
Many of the 100 or so Chinese ships, including five military ships, sped as close as 100 metres and blasted sirens at the Vietnamese vessels.
The Viet Nam Fisheries Surveillance Department said the Vietnamese fishing boats were operating in their traditional fishing grounds 42-45 nautical miles from the rig.
Meanwhile, about 200 Vietnamese people in Hiroshima and neighbouring localities in Japan on Sunday took to the streets to protest against China’s placement of the rig in Viet Nam’s waters.
They marched through many thoroughfares in Hiroshima, raising Viet Nam’s national flag and shouting slogans demanding China remove the rig. – VNS
