Historic floods wreak havoc in Lang Son province

(VOV) -Torrential rains in the aftermath of typhoon Rammasun continue to result in severe flooding in the northern border province of Lang Son, submerging many houses and disrupting people’s lives.



Rising flood water on July 20 inundated many areas in the province, including central Dong Kinh market, destroying over 2,000 ha of rice crops, and leading to traffic congestion on National Highways No. 1B, 4A, 4B and 279.

This was the third time Lang Son has been stricken by such a heavy floods since 1986. According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the water level in Ky Cung river – the largest in Lang Son – was measured at 257.39m (above the third alarm level) at 1pm on July 20.


The Lang Son provincial People’s Committee reported that by July 20, the natural disaster claimed four lives, including three swept away by floods and one killed while repairing damages to a house.


About 6,000 houses were deep under water, and more than 5,100 local households had to move to higher ground to escape landslides and floods. Lang Son province has mobilized 5,300 people to join ongoing rescue efforts.


Other northern provinces are facing heavy downpours that may lead to devastating floods of the Red River, Thai Binh River and Thao River.
