Deputy PM Vu Van Ninh calls for a faster pace of agricultural restructuring in the Mekong Delta.

Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Prime Minister, Vu Van Ninh has said that Mekong Delta provinces need to push through agricultural production restructuring so the region’s potential can be fully realised.

He made the request while chairing a meeting of the Southwestern Steering Committee on July 9 in Can Tho province.

Ninh said the region achieved encouraging results in the first half of the year but still had some drawbacks such as unbalanced development in infrastructure, unsustainable production and difficulties in selling agricultural produce.

The Deputy PM said provincial agriculture agencies should advise farmers on selecting the right crops and animals to grow, strengthen the linkage between farmers and traders as well as apply advanced technology to improve quality and add value to their agricultural products.

He said higher quality of regionally made products would help boost exports to large world markets.

For the rest of 2014, the Deputy PM said the Mekong Delta regions should work closely with central government ministries and agencies to make the Mekong Delta Economic Co-operation (MDEC) forum, scheduled for November in Soc Trang, a success.

According to a report, total economic output of the region reached over VND237.7 trillion (US$11.2 billion) in the first six months of 2014.

Its export revenue during the period was estimated at US$5.4 billion, a year-on-year rise of 11.4%.
