Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung have congratulated Cuban leaders, including Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of the Council of State as well as President of the Council of Ministers, on the 61st anniversary of the attack on Moncada Barracks. The victory of the Cuban armed forces ended the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on the Latin American country on July 26, 1953.


— A delegation from the embassy and other representative offices of Vietnam in Cambodia on Saturday laid a wreath and offered incense and a one-minute silence in honor of volunteer soldiers at the monument in Phnom Penh dedicated to Vietnamese martyrs falling during wartime in the country. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese soldiers and experts lost their lives while undertaking international missions in Cambodia in the past. The bodies of about 5,000 remain to be buried in Cambodia.


— A grand ceremony in celebration of the 85th founding anniversary of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) was organized in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday with the participation of Le Thanh Hai, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, and VGCL President Dang Ngoc Tung.


— Poland always considers Vietnam an important partner in Southeast Asia, Polish leaders, including Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives Jerzy Wenderlich, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Janusz Piechociński, affirmed during their meetings with visiting Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on his official visit to the European country on Friday and Saturday.


— Local and foreign law experts coming from 12 countries, including the U.S., Russia, Italia, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, and Thailand, gathered at an international workshop opening in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday to debate legal issues regarding the fact that China illegally placed its Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf from May to July this year.

— The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on Friday presented a certificate of merit to Nguyen Ngoc Binh, Minister to the Honorary Chairman of the Japan Alumni of Vietnam, in recognition of his contribution to boosting Vietnam-Japan relations and promoting connections among former Vietnamese students in Japan.


Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Friday gave the green light to the establishment of two DNA testing facilities to identify the remains of Vietnamese war martyrs without adequate personal information. The two centers, worth a combined US$24.1 million, will be built by the Ministry of Public Security and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Vietnam has set a target to identify the remains of 80,000 martyrs without adequate personal information by genetic testing by 2020.


Business:


— The scale of the local stock market, reaching some $52 billion, has been equal to 32 percent of Vietnam’s GDP, and is expected to become a major fund channel of the economy in 2020, Finance Minister Dinh Tien Dung said at a ceremony held on Saturday in Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 14th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam’s stock market. The Vietnamese stock market is among the 10 best-performing markets in the world.


The Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority and the Japan External Trade Organization on Saturday announced the establishment of the Vietnam-Japan Supporting Industry Forum with an aim to enable local suppliers to meet 32.2 percent of the demand of Japanese-invested enterprises in Vietnam.
