The workshop, jointly organized by the UK Consulate General in HCMC and the Korean Rail Research Institute, presented a number of British and Korean railway networks’ latest technologies.

Besides raising several railway financial issues as well as investment and construction procedures, the event also introduced numerous achievements of cooperation between the European and Asian countries in terms of railroad development.

Workshop participants, including British and Korean businesses, also exchanged experiences and discussed various issues related to the deployment of metro systems such as building technology, train locomotives, wagons, and operating systems.

According to the representatives of the two countries, the UK and Korea would provide support for Vietnam to build its VND42 trillion (US$2 billion) two phases of metro line No. 5 in HCMC, which is expected to serve about 526,000 passengers every day when being put into operation in 2018.

As of September 2013, foreign donors contributed around 860 million euros ($1.1 billion) to construct the first phase of the metro line, while the local Management Authority for Urban Railways is still calling for the UK and Korean governments, along with other investment sources, to help develop the second phase of the project.

Accordingly, the Asia Development Bank contributed $500 million, while the European Investment Bankand Spain provided funds of €150 million ($204 million) and €200 million ($272 million), respectively.

Metro line No. 5 will be 23.4 km long, running from the Saigon Bridge in Binh Thanh District to the Can Giuoc Coach Station in Binh Chanh District.

The first phase of the project, whose construction is expected to begin in 2015, will cover a section of 8.89 km running between the bridge and the Bay Hien Intersection in Tan Binh District while the second phase will run from the intersection to Can Giuoc Coach Station, covering around 14.5 km.

This is the third metro project in the city that has obtained enough capital to start its first phase. The other two projects are the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line (metro No. 1) that links District 1 and District 9, and the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line (metro No. 2) connecting District 1 and District 12.

Work on the first metro line in HCMC began in August 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in 2017 while the second metro line is planned to be finished in 2015 and put into trial operation in 2016.
