(Cinet)- On June 04, the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations (VFUA), a non-governmental organisation working for UNESCO’s ideals and targets, issued a statement against China’s illegal placement of its Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnamese waters.
China’s deployment of an oil rig in Vietnam’s territorial waters violates the country’s sovereignty and badly affects the the maritime security and safety in the South China Sea, the Vietnamese diplomatic mission to the United Nations and World Trade Organization said. The federation described China’s extremely dangerous act as a serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereignty rights and jurisdiction, and a direct threat to peace, stability, security, and maritime and aviation safety in the East Sea. The mission also said China’s move directly threatens peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.
The federation praised and favoured Vietnamese authority forces and fishermen to persistently go to sea and protect Vietnam’s sovereignty and legitimate interests in the East Sea.
The VFUA protested wrongful acts from the Chinese side, demanding that China immediately remove its rig and escort ships out of Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, stop any reoccurrences and strictly abide by international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The statement also highlighted that VFUA always wished to preserve and promote the traditional friendship and co-operation between Vietnamese and Chinese people, while calling on the China Federation of UNESCO Associations, Chinese people, and federations of UNESCO Associations and peace lovers around the world to raise their voices to protect justice and international law, contributing to maintaining peace and stability in the region and throughout the world.
