A massive fish die-off along a one-kilometer section of the Nhue River has created a terrible stench in the northern province of Ha Nam.

Thousands of fish carcasses have clogged the surface of the river near the Nhat Tuu bridge and a local irrigation pump since June 5, local Nguyen Son, living in the district’s Nhat Tuu ward, told Tuoi Tre newspaper Monday.

“The dead fish drifted down stream and got stuck here near the pump, smelling terribly rotten in this hot and sunny weather,” complained Son.

According to locals, heavy pollution and hot weather during the past days possibly caused the massive die-off.

However, the official cause has yet to be determined.
