Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh city and the Ho Chi Minh city General Science Library has made public a book including documents in Han-Nom scripts affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes and its waters in East Sea.


Han-Nom is an old form of Vietnamese script using modified Chinese characters.


The book titled “Vietnam’s sovereignty in the East Sea and Hoang Sa-Truong Sa” was written by well-known historian and geographer Nguyen Dinh Dau.


The book includes many copies of original historical documents which were made public for the first time.


The 46 Han-Nom documents in the book were collected by the Institute of Han-Nom Studies, with transcriptions and translations attached.


The eight-chapter book includes historical descriptions of the islands in the East Sea and their status during the late Le dynasty, the Tay Son dynasty, the 1945-1974 period, and from 1975 to the present time.


It also contains maps from the 15th century onwards that were created by Vietnamese, Chinese, Europeans and Americans to help in exploration and commercial navigation.


On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh city General Science Library opened an exhibition to introduce 93 ancient maps collected by researcher Nguyen Dinh Dau, 94 years old. The exhibition will run until June 8 in district 1.


Over the past 50 years, he has collected more than 3,000 maps of Vietnam by domestic and foreign authors./.
