Ministry website targeted by hacker

HA NOI (VNS) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) on Tuesday confirmed that its communications network had been attacked.

Nguyen Huu Chinh, director of the ministry’s Department of Information Technology, said that the hacker attached a toxic code into a document on Microsoft Word.

Then the hacker sent the document to different ministry employees. When they opened the document, the toxic code entered their computers.

Chinh said that the attack did not affect the ministry’s security data.

Earlier in the year, other hackers tried similar attacks, but without success,” he said.

The Department of Information Technology is now checking its IT communications system to prevent any further attacks from succeeding.

Ngo Tuan Anh, deputy chairman of an internet security company, Bkav Corporation, said that hackers often marked their files with .doc, .ppt, .xls and .pdf..

The method of hacking is not new, however, awareness of Internet security in some organisations is not high enough to ensure safety and cope with continuous new tricks, according to Anh. – VNS
