Under the theme ‘Great Family of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups and the Cause of Building and Defending the Country‘, the event is intended to express the voice of the community of Vietnamese ethnic groups in the cause of building and defending the country, and to honour the spirit of solidarity among the Vietnamese people. The programme is also one of many activities held with a view to the national sea and islands.
The event was attended by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Chairman Nguyen Thien Nhan, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and the leaders of other ministries, central sectors and Hanoian authorities, as well as 32 delegations representing 32 ethnic group from eight provinces and cities across the country and a large number of students, soldiers and Hanoian citizens.
Addressing the event, Chairman Nguyen Thien Nhan called Vietnam Family Day an occasion to affirm the special role of the Vietnamese family values in the country’s history. He stressed that continuing the glorious traditions of previous generations and the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam Great Family attaches importance to the fraternal solidarity to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and build a prosperous country.
A series of traditional Vietnamese ethnic festivals are expected to be celebrated during the two-day event. Among these are the Po Riayak (sea god) worshipping of the Cham people from Ninh Thuan province; the Feast and Commemoration Festival for Hoang Sa Soldiers and a traditional boat race festival of fishermen from Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai province; and the Cau Ngu (whale worship) Festival of fishermen from Da Nang.
Under the framework of the programme, many activities on sea, islands, borders and national sovereignty will be also held including exhibitions and documentary film screenings on sea and island sovereignty.
