LAI CHAU (VNS) – The police in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau have filed charges over a bridge collapse in the Son Binh Commune, which killed eight people and injured nearly 40.
The suspension bridge, connecting Chu Va 8 village and Chu Va 6 village, had collapsed on February 24 this year when a funeral procession was crossing it. The coffin and many people fell into the stream below.
The local police have filed a case of violation of construction regulations, thus leading to serious consequences, said deputy head of Lai Chau Police Le Van Bay.
The decision was made after an investigation by the Ministry of Public Security’s Institute of Criminal Sciences found that the bridge’s anchor screws did not meet the required standards. The faulty screws had reduced the bridge’s load-bearing capacity, leading to the collapse.
Further investigations are being carried out to clarify the role of the concerned individuals and agencies. Those found responsible for the bridge collapse would be prosecuted, Bay said.
The suspension bridge was opened to the public in December 2012. – VNS
