Ly Son fishermen condemn Chinese illegal acts

(VOV) – Local fishermen have expressed their determination to go ahead with offshore fishing exploitation and protect traditional fishing grounds and the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response to China’s act of launching HD -98 oil rig into Vietnam’s waters, 500 members of the fishery unions in An Hai and An Vinh communes gathered at a culture and sports centre in Quang Ngai central province’s Ly Son district on May 9, to vehemently oppose China’s brazen action.

Nguyen Quoc Chinh, representing Ly Son fishermen said local fishermen protest against China’s provocative act which goes against the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Over recent days, Chinese ships chased and crashed into Ly Son fishermen’s boats. However, despite threats to their life and property generations of Ly Son fishermen were not deterred from keeping their two traditional fishing grounds so as to protect the country’s sea and island sovereignty.

Nguyen Thanh Triet on fishing boat 96416 said, “I think this action is a suppression for fishermen. The Chinese side needs to comply with regulations of international law.”
