The Vietnam Coast Guard reported the Chinese side used around 86 vessels of nine different types, including frigates, to cruise around the drilling rig and prevent Vietnamese boats travelling near.
Vietnamese boats are tasked with approaching near the rig, demanding China remove its drilling rig and flotilla from Vietnam’s territorial waters.
Lieutenant Colonel Phan Duy Cuong aboard Vietnam Coast Guard ship CSB 8003 told VOV that when Vietnamese boats were around 5-6.5 nautical miles away, they were attacked and prevented by many Chinese ships.
