(VOV) – In observance of United Nations Day of Vesak 2014 (Buddhist calendar-2558), President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Nguyen Thien Nhan on April 30 sent a congratulatory letter to Buddhist clergies nationwide.
The letter states UN Day of Vesak 2014 hosted by the Vietnam Buddhist Shangha (VBS) provides people a chance to honour the teachings of Buddha such as human compassion and wisdom, tolerance and harmony, respect and protection of human rights democracy and social justice, against hegemony, violence, crime, war, terrorism and social evils, building a social community for sustainable development in harmony with peace, friendship and friendly cooperation.
Nhan said the VFF Central Committee hopes the VBS continues to be an active VFF member and strives to become an international Buddhist centre, thereby promoting peace solidarity and cooperation between Vietnamese Buddhism and other Buddhist nations for sustainable development in the region and wider world.
Earlier on April 29, a culture week welcoming the UN Day of Vesak 2014 was launched in HCM City with diverse activities such as vegetarian food exhibitions and fairs, a flower art contest, calligraphy writing and Buddha painting competitions and Dharma preaching.
The week runs through May 4.
