Former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Ruud Van Nistelrooy is spending the last day of his Vietnam tour today, and his strong impressions for the trip were well updated on his Facebook and Twitter even prior to his arrival in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.

“Looking forward to my trip to Vietnam this week. Can’t wait to see this beautiful country and to meet many loyal fans there,” the retired Dutch striker excitingly announced via a Facebook post on April 1, and his fans knew it was not an April’s Fool Day joke.

Van Nistelrooy arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam’s southern hub, on Thursday, starting his visit as part of the Heineken UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour 2014, which provides diehard football fans with an opportunity to touch and feel the prestigious trophy. The 38-year-old is a brand ambassador for Heineken, which is a major partner of the UEFA Champions League and is taking the trophy around the world in its eighth annual tour.


Shortly after he walked out of the entry terminal at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Van Nistelrooy was overwhelmed by a huge crowd of fans waiting to see their idol forward.


“Thank you Vietnam for the warm welcome!” he tweeted, attaching a seven-second video via Vine showing the striker smiled and waved toward hundreds of fans who happily shouted “Ruud..Ruud” in welcoming their hero.


Some fans greeted him with the Vietnamese traditional conical hat.

Upon his arrival, Van Nistelrroy attended a media meeting at Bitexto Financial Tower, HCMC’s new iconic building, and later, an online chat with his Vietnamese fans, which was live updated on www.tuoitrenews.vnPost by UEFA Champions League.


In his second day in Vietnam, Van Nistelrooy had a meeting with local fans at Thao Dien Village in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, where participants were able to touch and feel the UEFA Champions League trophy.


The Dutchman also gave away Manchester United jerseys with his autograph to diehard fans and tweeted a photo about this event.
