Nhan Dan Online – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung watched as the Vietnam People’s Navy held a national flag raising ceremony on its first two Kilo-class submarines in the central province of Khanh Hoa on April 3.
Addressing the ceremony, PM Dung emphasised the special importance of the event, which marked the official beginning of operations of Vietnam’s first submarine brigade, as well as the new development of the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Vietnam People’s Army in general. Currently comprising the HQ-182 Hanoi and the HQ-183 Ho Chi Minh City, the brigade’s mission is to protect the country’s sovereignty over its seas and islands.
As a country that has suffered great pain and heavy losses due to war, Vietnam always wishes for peace to facilitate its national construction and the improvement of people’s living conditions, said PM Dung, adding that peace cannot be achieved by desire alone. Vietnam must be strong in all aspects – including politics, economics, culture, national defense and security, diplomacy and within the great national unity bloc – in order to firmly maintain and protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the PM noted.
In that spirit, the whole Party, people and army should fully understand and effectively implement the guidelines and resolutions of the Party, he said. The whole nation must pursue fast and sustainable socio-economic development and focus on strengthening the capacity of the people’s army and police forces.
PM Dung also reaffirmed that Vietnam’s defense policy is one of peace and self-defense. The modernisation of Vietnam’s army is exclusively for self-defense and the safeguarding of its legitimate interests. It does not in any way target any other country.
The PM took the occasion to extend his sincere thanks to international friends, especially Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian Government and Ministry of Defense, and other Russian friends for their valuable support for Vietnam in its army modernisation process.
On the same day, PM Nguyen Tan Dung examined the training and combat readiness of several navy units on duty at the Cam Ranh military port.
