HA NOI (VNS)— Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has agreed to extend the deadline by five years for overseas Vietnamese to register for citizenship or restore their Vietnamese citizenship following recommendations by the Justice Ministry.

The new deadline for overseas Vietnamese to extend their Vietnamese citizenship is July 1, 2019. The amended Law on Nationality will be discussed further at the National Assembly general working session scheduled for next month.

Previously, according to the Law on Nationality, overseas Vietnamese would risk losing their Vietnamese citizenship if they did not register by July 1, 2014.

The law, effective from July 1, 2009, stipulates that overseas Vietnamese must register with overseas Vietnamese representative missions to retain their Vietnamese nationality within five years after the effective date of this law.

Around 6,000 of the approximately 4.5 million overseas Vietnamese have registered for citizenship, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Government also asked the Justice Ministry, Foreign Affairs Ministry and Public Security Ministry to work on simplifying the procedures for overseas Vietnamese to register.
