English man dies touring Ha Long Bay

An 63-year-old English tourist named Wright David Denning died on April 3 after accidentally falling into the sea as his boat was touring the famous Ha Long Bay, local authorities has said.

Mr Wright’s tour was organized by Hanoi-based Viettour Travel Company. Ten more foreign tourists and a local tour guide were on the boat at the time of the accident, which took place near Titop Island.

According to an announcement by the People’s Committee of Quang Ninh Province, due to “negligence,” Mr Wright fell into the sea and died.

The committee said it had informed the British Embassy in Vietnam and the victim’s family about the accident.

Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a popular destination in northern Vietnam. Local authorities in late March said 3.2 million people visited Ha Long in the first quarter of this year.

However, it also witnessed a number of fatal accidents involving foreign tourists. In late 2011, 12 people, including 11 foreigners, died when their boat sunk also near Titop Island.

Nearly a year later, five Taiwanese died when their tender sank after colliding with another boat about 100 meters offshore.
