Dien Bien Phu victory in focus at Moscow seminar

The Dien Bien Phu victory of Vietnam (May 7, 1954) and the triumph by the Soviet Red Army in the Great Patriotic War (May 9, 1945) were the main theme of a seminar held in Moscow on April 29.

Speaking at the seminar, Russian military experts agreed that the Dien Bien Phu victory was the result of Vietnamese soldiers’ and people’s arduous struggle against French forces at a very challenging time for the newly independent country.

Participants also noted that the victory was the perfect combination of modern military strategy and decisive guerilla tactics. The victory directly led to the signing of the Geneva Agreement on ending the war. It brought an end to French colonialism in Vietnam, and restored peace in Indochina .

Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Pham Xuan Son said despite happening in different timelines, the victories of the Vietnamese and Soviet Union had a very close link that is a continuation of the history of the heroism of the two peoples.

The triumph of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War was also a positive factor encouraging revolutionary movements in the world in general as well as in Vietnam , Son said.

He affirmed that Vietnamese people are always grateful to the Soviet Union for its tremendous support in Vietnam ‘s struggle for liberation and its national construction.-VNA
