Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh extended his best wishes to the ethnic Khmer community on the occasion of their New Year festival, Chol Chnam Thmay, at a get-together held on April 4 by the Southwest Steering Committee (SSC) in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.
At the event Deputy PM Ninh, who is also Head of the Committee, praised achievements the region has gained in recent years with important economic developments and for ensuring social welfare, security and national defence.
The Deputy PM expressed that he hopes the Khmer people will continue to promote their traditions of unity and patriotism, while implementing Party and State policies.
Also on this occasion, the SSC presented 26 certificates of merit to outstanding individuals for their contributions to preserving and promoting Khmer traditional culture.
The Chol Chnam Thmay festival, which falls annually in mid-April, is one of the most important festivals of the year for the Khmer people. It is usually held at pagodas where people wish and pray for a lucky new year.
