Nhan Dan Online – Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho Anh Tuan has stressed the need to tap the potential of Vietnam’s cruise industry in order to attract more international cruise passengers.

Speaking at a conference held in Thua Thien – Hue province on April 16 under the theme ‘Development Strategy for Cruise Industry in Vietnam’, the Deputy Minister pointed out the industry’s shortcomings such as weak infrastructure and the lack of stations for cruise passengers.

The poor quality of tourist services at seaports and support services for visitors also forms part of the industry’s underperformance, he added.

He noted that the Prime Minister has approved the Strategy for Tourism Development by 2020, in which the development of the maritime economy—including tourism at sea—is among the top priorities.

Nineteen speeches were delivered at the conference focusing on solutions to resolve these and other problems. Some of the remedies discussed were facilitating customs and administrative procedures for visitors, improving the qualifications and professionalism of those working in the field, diversifying tourist products, and building more shopping malls and entertainment centres.

The speakers also proposed that relevant agencies should further co-ordination with the Asia Cruise Association to promote Vietnam’s sea tourism to international travellers.

Asia is fast becoming an attractive destination for many cruise liners; the continent is expected to welcome 3.7 million visitors in 2017. Vietnam is in a favourable location for connecting to modern sea ports in the region such as Hong Kong and Singapore.
