“Most of them were hit in the face with desk legs and rifle butt… but their condition is stable now,” Colonel Le Tien Thanh, Commander of the Border Guard of Quang Ninh Province told Thanh Nien.

The shooting took place after Vietnamese authorities arrested a group of 16 illegal Chinese migrants, including four women and two children, at Bac Phong Sinh border gate in Quang Ninh early Friday.

Around noon, while Vietnamese officers were filling out the necessary forms for their return to China, several of the illegal migrants seized an AK-47 rifle from a Vietnamese officer and opened fire.

Major Nguyen Minh Dai, who translated for the group, was killed immediately. Junior Lieutenant Le Vu Viet Khanh, a police dog handler, was also shot to dead.

Five Chinese men died in the shooting, some of whom apparently committed suicide by leaping out the windows.

Their remains and the 11 survivors, including the women and children, were returned to Chinese forces later that day. The border checkpoint was reopened this morning.

Colonel Thanh said that Chinese authorities are in charge of investigate the case according to the two countries’ statute on border guard coordination.
