(VOV) – Scientists have examined additional legal evidence to support the Vietnamese lawsuit against US chemical companies, asking them to admit accountability for the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam.

Meeting in Hanoi on March 12, they made an in-depth analysis of the correlation between the toxic chemical supplied by the US companies to its military to spray in Vietnam in the 1960s and chronic diseases suffered by Vietnamese victims.
They discussed the US’s legal responsibility for using herbicides, containing Agent Orange/dioxin, as chemical weapons during the war.
They also considered foreign experiences, including similar lawsuits in the US, Canada, Australia and India. As a case in point, war veterans of the Republic of Korea who joined the Vietnam War logged a class action suit, demanding the US compensate for the harmful effects of AO/dioxin on their health.
Dr Tran Ngoc Tam from the Vietnam Association for Victims of AO/Dioxin (VAVA) said there is no denying that the toxic chemical the US army used during the Vietnam War has the catastrophic consequences on the environment, ecology and human health. Leading world scientists and socialists have proved direct links between the toxic chemical and fatal diseases.
Professor Nong Van Hai from the Institute of Biotechnology said bringing the lawsuit to the US court is the first step towards justice. It wakens human conscience for the actions and atrocities of war which have left devastating consequences on the environment and human health.
In fact, Vietnamese scientists have conducted a number of research projects, and their results cannot be used in the lawsuit as they have not been published internationally.
Delegates suggested that Vietnam re-consider the announcement of scientific research results to support its international lawsuits.
