More than 30 men, suspected to be illegal loggers, stormed a checkpoint and brutally attacked three forest rangers in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong last week.

At around 6 a.m. on March 19, Dinh Cong Loi, Ho Phi Bao, and Nguyen Xuan Quyen of Quang Son Forestry Company in Dak G’long District were sleeping in the checkpoint near a forest.

A group of men with knives, sticks, hoes, shovels and homemade guns burst in, forced the trio to take their clothes off, and assaulted them with sticks.

Loi was the worst sufferer as the men wrapped him in a blanket and hit him until he passed out.

Before leaving, the men demolished the utensils the rangers were using and took away three mobile phones.

The rangers are being treated in hospital.

Loi has the most serious injuries – two broken arms and a five-centimeter gash on his head.

Two days earlier a group of illegal loggers had surrounded another checkpoint in the commune and threatened the rangers there.

The local police said they have identified three of the 30 men.

They are continuing with their investigations.
