Germany’s Lufthansa halts 23-yr Vietnam service on March 26

Germany’s national flag carrier Lufthansa will offer its two last flights between Frankfurt and Ho Chi Minh City tomorrow, March 25, before ceasing the service after 23 years.

Vo Huy Cuong, deputy head of the Civial Aviation Administration of Vietnam, confirmed to Tuoi Tre that he had been notified by the German airline, which launched its first service to Vietnam in 1990, of the cessation.

Vo Huy Cuong, deputy head of the Civial Aviation Administration of Vietnam, confirmed to Tuoi Tre that he had been notified by the German airline, which launched its first service to Vietnam in 1990, of the cessation.

Lufthansa, the largest airline in Europe, both in terms of overall passengers and fleet size, will suspend flights to and from Vietnam until its fleet has been appropriately restructured, Cuong said, citing a document he received from Lufthansa.

However, Lufthansa’s representative office in Vietnam, located in HCMC, will remain open until April 30.

In the absence of Lufthansa, Air France will become the only European airline to fly to Vietnam, according to Saigon Times Online.

If passengers still wish to fly to Europe with Lufthansa, they must fly to Bangkok on any carrier and board Lufthansa flights there, the economic news website said.

Passengers are currently able to travel between Frankfurt and HCMC via Bangkok on Lufthansa flights LH772 and LH773.
