Three Malaysian nationals escorted by Ho Chi Minh City police after a trial Thursday

A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday handed down prison sentences of up to 14 years to three Malaysian nationals for using fake credit cards to buy goods.

Jackson Tan Pei Loong, 30, received 14 years while Tye Soon Hin, 33, and Teh Chee Wan, 33, got 12 years each.

They were arrested on March 8, 2012 after a failed attempt to use fake credit cards to buy mobile phones in the city.

The trio entered a mobile phone shop in District 7 to buy 20 Samsung Galaxy Note phones worth VND320 million.

The shop employees said only 12 phones are available in stock.

Hin gave them two Visa cards to pay for the phones, but the cards failed to work.

He gave them two other cards, but the cards could pay VND64 million only.

The employees felt suspicious when the trio gave them some more cards. They called the banks to check.

The banks said the cards were fake and called police.

The trio was arrested afterwards.

Police checked the Malaysians’ apartment and found 57 fake credit cards, three golden necklaces and various receipts of shops from where the frauds bought goods.

Loong told police he met another Malaysian man known only as Ah Chai in October 2011 through the introduction of Tan Bee Ling. Ling was arrested in HCMC four months later in another credit card scam.

Chai gave Loong fake credit cards and promised Loong 10 percent of the value of the goods he could bought using the cards.

Between November and December 2012, Loong and Ling used the cards to buy goods many times in HCMC. He was paid US$1,300 in total.

In February 2012, Loong met Hin and Wan in HCMC, who agreed to join the gang.

Between February 19, 2012 and March 7, 2012, the trio used 42 fake credit cards provided by Ah Chai to buy goods worth around VND1.2 billion ($57,000) in HCMC and Khanh Hoa Province.
