Nhan Dan – Vietnam has been celebrating the 83rd anniversary of the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, which falls on March 26.


In Hanoi, the Military Commission of the Party Central Committee and the Ministry of National Defence organised a ceremony on March 25 to meet with ten outstanding and five promising young people of the Vietnam People’s Army who have recorded excellent achievements in 2013.


The most prominent figure is captain Can Ngoc Son, head of the Da Dong B island of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in Khanh Hoa province, who braved fierce winds and waves to rescue ten fishermen in distress.


Addressing the ceremony, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich, Chief of the General Department of Politics praised these outstanding young people, saying that the General Department of Politics and the Ministry of National Defence will always help these young to contribute to the nation.


Another ceremony to honour the outstanding young people was held on the evening of the same day in Hanoi by the Politics General Department of the Vietnam People’s Army.


In Ho Chi Minh City, the municipal Communist Youth Union yesterday began construction of a centre in District 7 to support young workers. The centre covers 2,200 sq.m, costing VND15 billion (US$705,000) from the city’s budget. Upon its completion, the centre will be a place for young workers to gather and relax after work.


Earlier on March 24 in Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee held a workshop discussing the results and role of the Youth Union in developing the nation’s culture during the past 30 years.


The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Quang Tri province yesterday held a ceremony to commend 83 outstanding Secretaries of the Youth Union branches in the province who made significant contributions to youth movements.


Many other provinces across the country also organised activities to mark the anniversary, such as meetings, award ceremonies and writing contests.
