HCMC to remove 1,300 households from landslide-prone areas Nearly 1,300 households in Ho Chi Minh City will be relocated from landslide-prone areas within three years from now, according to a residential relocation plan to avoid natural disasters until 2015, with an onwards vision towards 2020.

Under the plan, which has been approved by the city People’s Committee, a total of 1,294 families from 62 landslide vulnerable areas, including 42 areas described as dangerous and especially dangerous, in District 2 and Binh Thanh, Thu Duc, Nha Be, Can Gio, and Binh Chanh District.


These families will be moved to resettlement areas or existing residential areas.


According to the relocation schedule, 647 households in especially dangerous areas will be moved to safe places this year; 338 another will be relocated next year; and the remainder will have new homes in 2016.


Once these families leave their areas, concerned agencies will build or consolidate embankments to prevent landslides.


Regarding resettlement areas, the People’s Committee will grant a household a plot of land of 50-150 square meters, depending on their individual actual situations.


All households subject to relocation will be given compensation in accordance with applicable regulations, the committee said.


In addition, every household will be given VND20 million (US$960) as support for resettlement and another VND20 million as support for overcoming disaster consequences.


Moreover, vocational training courses will be offered free of charge to those subject to relocation, at a maximum cost of VND3 million per person, the authorities said.
